The Shipyard Redevelopment Project

Container Park Concept Plan

The Shipyard Project promises to be a prominent destination within the upper Midwest. Once a center for rail and water transport of raw materials, the now vacated brownfield will be dramatically transformed into a destination of recreation and tourism. This vision must reflect the values and needs of neighbors and stakeholders of the Shipyard - our approach to public engagement starts with understanding and appreciating the community and its residents.

This web page will serve as the primary source for public information and materials for the Shipyard Project. Check back  to learn about upcoming public meetings, take community surveys, view preliminary designs, and share your input.

Phase I

Construction for Phase I is taking place from August 2022 through early 2024. This work includes a riverfront promenade/multi-modal path, floating dock, fishing pier, habitat enhancement, and an accessible kayak launch.

The City’s initial $10.5 million investment in site preparation and Phase I amenities was made possible through several grants from state and federal partners. The Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC) awarded the City $1 million for brownfield remediation. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) also awarded a $500,000 grant for brownfield remediation, as well as a $563,000 grant for green infrastructure/stormwater management. The Fox River Trustee Council awarded a $304,500 grant for construction of the fishing pier and wildlife habitat enhancement.

Phase 2

The second Phase includes a great lawn for concerts, festivals, and other events; a dog park; an urban beach, playground, and splash pad. Construction is tentatively planned to start in late 2024. The National Parks Service has awarded the City a $5 million grant to support construction of Phase 2.

Phase 3

The final Phase includes a unique commercial plaza that will support local start-up businesses that specialize in food, beverage, retail, and recreation.
