WHAT IS THE FIRE AND EMERGENCY SERVICES EXPLORER PROGRAM?
The Fire and Emergency Services Explorer Program is a hands-on career experience facilitation. Youth Experience what it feels like to be a firefighter and a paramedic without making a commitment to the profession. This is a great opportunity to find out if firefighting is the career for you.
WHAT DO THE EXPLORERS DO?
Fire and Emergency Services Explorers participate in numerous activities, experiences, trips, tours and training events. The Explorer is instructed on the basic fundamentals of firefighting and emergency services; they experience hands on training in regards to hoselines, fire attack, ladder work, vehicle extrication, and emergency medical services. The explorer also has the opportunity to do ride-alongs. The activities are exciting, challenging, and very rewarding
HOW DOES THE PROGRAM WORK?
The explorer program meets twice a month in the evenings to accommodate youth during the school year and for those who have part-time jobs. Each meeting runs about one hour in length. Explorers wear a Fire department type uniform on occasion to classes and for special assignments. Explorers are given “leadership roles of office” and most of the training is established by what the Explorer wants to learn. Parents are also welcome to attend the meetings; to assist as chaperons for trips, or to simply learn more about what it takes to be a firefighter.
The purpose of the Explorer Program is to provide curriculum, training and experience to youth who have expressed interest in a potential career in Fire and Emergency Services . This program also provides youth with experience in leadership roles; serves as a tool to build self esteem, responsibility, self confidence, assertiveness and discipline.
Explorers benefit from this program in many ways. If the Explorer chooses to pursue professional status in Fire and Emergency Services, they will have established a firm base of knowledge, insight, and expertise in many facets of Fire and Emergency Services . Obtaining a position with any particular agency can be challenging. The Explorer will leave this program with the skills necessary to aid them in their future endeavors toward a career in firefighting and emergency services.
